In this part of John's vision, we hear more of the judgement to come, illustrated through the imagery of trumpets. The earth and the sea will be ruined and darkness will cover the land. God is warning us to turn to Him for salvation because He is a just and merciful God. He has graciously given His one and only Son to rescue us. Will we listen to God and turn to Him? And will we tell others of God's merciful rescue plan before it's too late?

In this part of his vision, Jesus shows John a number. This number tells us that the number of people who will be saved will be restricted yet immeasurable. Not everyone will be saved but there will be too many to count. The redeemed people kept safe from judgement will be the ones who have trusted in Jesus as their Saviour and King. And judgement could come at any time. The question is, are you ready?

It doesn't take much to see that the world we live in is broken. Even our culture today recognises this. In this part of John's vision, Jesus shows him 4 horses which symbolize a world destroyed by abused power and violence, famine, death and persecution. And then He reminds us that there will be final judgement and no-one will be able to stand, except for the one trusting in Him for salvation - Jesus is our only hope.

If you really believe something, you will live differently. If we really believe that Jesus is our only hope, then we will live differently. John sees Jesus first as a roaring lion fighting for His people, then as a gentle lamb caring for them. He is the only one worthy to save us and purchase us for God. If we believe this, then we MUST live differently and live lives for His glory.

John's vision in this part of the letter is reminiscent of the prophets of old - they were all facing challenges and they needed to see that Jesus is still King. And we are no different. When this world feels out of control, we can remember that God has not forgotten us; He will keep his promises to us and Jesus will always be King. And one day, all of God's people and all of creation will praise Him, gathered round His throne.

Jesus said the church at Laodicea made him feel sick because they were delusional. They thought they were rich but only Jesus offers true riches. Are we the same? Do we store up treasures on earth that perish and fade or are we investing in treasures in heaven that last forever?

Jesus holds the keys to the kingdom of God and He has given us an open door to proclaim His message of salvation. We often feel like we are too weak for the task ahead, but this passage reminds us that He will give us the strength to live for Him because we belong to Him.

The church at Sardis was at death's door. It had got distracted with people pleasing and had given up honouring God. It needed the Holy Spirit to give it true life again. And we need the Holy Spirit to revive us, to keep us faithful to Jesus and to be the church we were made to be.

In the final verses of chapter 2, we are encouraged that as we grow in our faith and live with Jesus as Lord over every part of our lives, God will make us holy. And we have a bright future to look forward to - one where evil will be destroyed and we will live with Jesus, 'the bright morning star', forever.

In this sermon on Baptism Sunday, we hear that the Bible tells us that once we were dead in sin but in his grace and kindness, God reached out to us by sending his son Jesus to save us and bring us to life. Baptism enacts this amazing transformation in a believer's life when they move from death to life, simply because of their faith in what God has done. It is God's free gift to each of us who believes.

What, Where and When

We meet every Sunday at 10.30am to worship God, speak to Him in prayer and hear from His Word together. Expect a warm welcome from our Welcome Team who will answer any questions you may have and help you find a seat. Our Sunday Services typically last 90 minutes and include a mix of modern and traditional songs led by a small contemporary worship group, times of prayer, the Bible reading and the main event: the Bible talk (sermon). For more information on what to expect on a Sunday, check out our dedicated Sundays page here. We meet at the church building and you can find full details of our address here. You are most welcome to join us and we hope to see you on a Sunday morning soon!

What about my children?

At GBC, we believe that as church family, it is good to meet together to worship the Lord as one body and for all ages to be welcomed and transformed by the preached Word of God (Romans 10:17). For this reason, our services are all-in and include Bible Bites, action songs and fun and accessible sermon packs to help each age and stage engage with and be nurtured by the main Bible teaching. For more information on how this works in practice, check out our dedicated Sundays for Families page here.
